Finding Inspiration

This Tumblr. has become devoted to helping a 20 year old college student rediscover, revive, and relive her connection with art, and share her process with others - whether it be through studying great artists of the pasts, learning of artists from the present, or creating works of her own.
The last project for my environmental sculpture class was to make something that floats in water.  I found these really cool reeds and was able to bend them and tie them together into some interesting triangular shapes.  I then covered up different triangles with woven leaves in order to create a contrast between the positive and negative spaces.  One of the triangles was made so that when it floated, it came out, and ended up working as a sail - my sculpture began sailing all around the other students.  Unfortunately, the picture in the water doesn’t really show many of the shapes well.

The photos from the day outing of my environmental sculpture class.  I worked on this for 6 hours straight (you’d think I’d have something more impressive!).  The last two photos are ones I took quickly with my iPhone when it first started raining.

Environmental sculpture - week 3 - Rock balancing

These compositions fell and had to be rebuilt at one point, so they are not as strong in the photographs as they were originally.  I tried making three forms framing the water that leaned towards eachother and interacted, or “danced”, with eachother in a way.

My second week of environmental sculpture - our task was to integrate clay figures into our environment.

I molded my clay to mimic a type of lichen/fungi on the stump I chose as my canvas.

It’s been a while since I posted.  I’ve been taking a class at my Uni called “Environmental Sculpture”.  We have to work each week to make something completely out of organic materials in nature.
This image is my first - it was supposed to be a “2D” sculpture.  Unfortunately I didn’t finish (mainly due to starting and destroying my sculptures a million times)

Second half of my first portfolio (not in order), all images of my dog Homer.  The portfolio began with simple views to get an understanding of his figure, and then went to more complex angles for an overall idea.  Eventually, the portfolio tried using colors in order to bring out his personality (the summary for the AP graders was much more in depth)

When I posted some images from my portfolio of the burned paper, I became curious and wanted to look up other people who used this medium.   I found several artists, but this one struck me the most.  This is a street artist from Russia who created some portraits to be hung on the side of a WWII hospital by using smoke stains.  In his process, he created the portrait using bandages, and then setting them on fire.

Here’s a kinda cool example of the close ups incorporating he layering of the papers, and some cool effects from the water.

This is my favorite of the smoke designs. The portfolio centered around a piece of layered, burnt paper with smoke stains. I decided eventually to manipulate the smoke stains by burning certain materials and using water, and this is my result.

I figured I’d post the work I’m least proud of first. This was my 2d design portfolio. It was “creation through destruction” and I wrote up some spiel to make it sound well thought out, but the truth is I wanted to play with fire. I might post one or two close ups, since the smoke made a very interesting design.

Art

I really miss art. I miss studying the history, as well as learning about the current artists. And most of all, I miss doing my own artwork. So I’m going for a change - I’m going to attempt to devote my tumblr to the pursuit of this passion of mine. I’ll probably fall off the horse and just start reblogging random stuff again, but I’m trying original posts. I’ll probably start off by blogging some of my old artwork…
